Description

The Western Veil Nebula (NGC 6960; also called the Witch's Broom) is one component of the entire Veil Nebula or Cygnus Loop complex that consists of the remains of a massive star that exploded some 8000 years ago.  Below the Witch's Broom in this image is the named nebulous structure Pickering's Triangle - it was discovered photographically in 1904 by Williamina Fleming, but credit went to Edward Charles Pickering, the director of the observatory, as was the custom of the day.  The entire Veil Nebula is 110 light years across (about three degrees in diameter as viewed from Earth) and is about 2100 light years away.

The Western Veil Nebula imaged in SHO was of similar brightness in all three channels.  The Witch's Broom itself was somewhat brighter in OIII than Ha or SII.  Several SHO combinations were created and some of those results were also experimentally combined.  As a result of these combinations, some nebulous wispy structures became greenish along with other interesting colors and became the final color palette. Once again, PixInsight's GeneralisedHyperbolicStretch script by Dave Payne and Mike Cranfield was impressive in pulling out the faint details in this image.
